Definitely(I think) a fern of sorts, some I do believe are edible in that stage but I wouldn’t until you can confirm the species.
Mountain Laurel
a fern but definitely not ostrich fern ( fiddleheads). the color is too light and fiddleheads arent hairy like that. I’ve seen these before. they grow more in open woods instead of along streams and rivers like fiddleheads do.
we are about 2 weeks ahead here in n. Maine as well. my black ice plum is about a week behind your plum. sour cherries are at budbreak as well. currants are leafing out as well as the honeyberries.
@wdingus … thanks… I was not sure on that one. There are several wild azalea on that hillside too.
TNHunter
Roadside Morus alba today in Nashville with ripe fruit. Birds are already getting most of the black fruit. Albas are extremely early here. For comparison, the rubras in middle Tennessee were at peak bloom last week.
I put up shots of Winekist & Redfield elsewhere, but am so happy to see Claygate coming thru after heavy pruning in '23.
What’s the coldest temperatures you get there? Any dieback?
Christmas 2022 it hit -2f. No dieback. The main crop always gets froze out in the spring. This year has been an exceptional spring for fruit set. Only two very light frosts since Feb 14.
How big do Silas Wood fruit get? The first few sapodillas I had were like around the size of a Idaho potato, but when I was at the tropical fruit store last weekend they were closer to like a red potato.
Second bloom coming on my calamondin. Still holding the first flush of fruits too.
are you growing any other mulberry varieties? the shangri la looks very fruitful!
if you happen to find any suckers or have rooted cutting to share of this road side find i love to trade. please pm. thank you!
Not worth it. Bland flavor. There are much better hybrids and rubras I’ll be checking over the next few weeks.
Tbh I’m not sure, but I think red potato is close to accurate. The largest one is like the size of a fuzzy kiwi now.
