Some quince blossoms. Trees are still young, but vigorous. Last year we had more insect damage to the buds.
“The great battle of our age…”
What sort of plants are these vines?
Desert King breba.
This is my earliest fig and I only get a few breba a year. All of the tiny figs will fall off due to not having the fly here in South Ga.
They are different cultivars of Clematis.
Does a majority of the last year’s wood get pruned?
Illinois everbearing, but it is overwhelmed with popcorn disease. I only get about 10 percent of the crop. I have grafted kokuso, silk hope, colier, black prince, tehama, and gerardi to it this year to see which ones are popcorn resistant.
have you seen any hummingbirds feeding on their flowers? last couple springs I’ve seen them on mine. earliest I’ve ever seen hummingbirds in n. Maine. glad to be able to give them something to eat so early in the season. many don’t put out their hummingbird feeders until June here.
that is a good idea! please do update us with your results. i heard that silk hope and gerardi are popcorn resistance, but i have not heard about any white mulberry being popcorn resistance. in my area is no popcorn issue so i can’t confirm if that is true. but im interested in knowing that works for you. thanks!
No, I didn’t know they were attractive to hummingbirds! I have to keep mine netted against the deer, so I don’t know if they could reach them. I’ve found that I can keep the bottoms of the nets lifted up a bit so the sparrows can run through, but even the large bees sometimes have trouble with them. I don’t usually see hummingbirds at the house until June, but I often see them in the woods in May. I’ve heard reports of people seeing them around here for the last week. We put our feeders up in mid April when the Pulmonaria blooms—my grandmother always said they went to hers.
Good to know that they like haskap too! I’ll have to try to adjust the nets to make it easier for them.
my indigo gem and treat are my 1st to bloom. they are right next to each other and had 4 different hummingbirds feeding on them the last week of Apr. last spring. we had a early warm spring that year so my plants bloomed early. normally they bloom this week.
@Bradybb I have not cut back any of my figs and I have been growing them in pots for the past 4 years, but this fall/winter I will probably need to. They are getting out of hand. I have 10 or so trees of different varieties.
I have some avocados! I didn’t hand pollinate just ignored them. Happy to see several, I’ll likely remove all but one.
Okay, being in pots is keeping them smaller. After transferring a Desert King to ground, production went up a lot.But the more fruit equals a bigger plant,if there is room.
Thank you for the insight and thoughts. I am trying to determine what to do with my yard.
