Buffalo Pea-Ground Plum

I ate some when I was a little kid and lived out by a windswept prairie. They are happy, growing in that condition.
A good candidate for development into a niche food crop, tasty as is.

Never heard of them. do you know a nursey that sells them?

No, if for sale anywhere, probably a native prairie nursery. I haven’t seen them in person in over 60 years.
I think they need a baking hot, windy droughty open prairie to be successful. To call it soil would be generous, more like limestone caliche? with buffalo grass.

Be careful. Many vetch species produce flowers leaves and pods that look very similar, but are toxic to consume. The pod is the only edible portion of the groundplum, the rest of the plant is poisonous. It’s more of a vegetable like a green bean than a fruit as you consume it before it is ripe and dried out. It’s essentially a round pea pod.
