Bug Bites Asian Pear

This is a Shin Li pear. I know this may be partially my fault for not spraying earlier. Should I take off the fruitlets with what appears to be bug bites on them. Still have a lot to learn.

I am kinda wondering what kind bug bite these are, they didn’t look like PC bites to me

Oriental fruit moth or codling moth?

My guess is they are curc feeding bites, the adult curc eats chunks of fruit. With moths when you see a spot like that there should be a hole bored into the fruit and frass coming out.

If I didn’t spray my asian pears they would all get ruined by the curc. So now I spray them just like I spray plums, apples, peaches, etc.

I would cut a few open just to make sure it isn’t a codling moth laying eggs. I’m pretty sure it is just a feeding bite, but 2 years ago I had codling moths hit my 2 Harrow Sweet pears and before they were the size of a nickle I had a little worm growing up in each of the over 200 fruitlets on each tree. I was planning to thin any way, but I couldn’t find a single fruitlet without a worm.

Scott, when do you start worrying about codling moth and OFM attacks in our area? I feel like I should be adding Spinosad to the Surround soon if not already.

Asian pears are curc magnets for me. Spraying is a must

Thanks everyone for the responses. I really appreciate it. I will cut a few open and let you know what I find.

What do you use for spraying?

Ive sprayed imiden twice this year and it seems to have worked. In the past i just used triazicide

Thanks.

I start spinosad when I start Surround, not long after petal fall. Eggs take up to two weeks to hatch and you can nip things in the bud with an early program. I used to start later but I had more early cm/ofm then which was probably due to spraying only after they were already in the fruits.

Thanks I did cut some up. I did pull one of the tree that looks strange. See the picture below

Scott,

Thanks. Looks like a need to spray

Thanks for your help

Thanks

Could be a few problems you have on those fruitlets. Those bug bites were from plum curculio, the enemy #1 pest in many orchards. You may have other disease issues, too. Wonder if it’d be scab.
