Buying Blueberries from Simmons Plant Farm

I was planning on buying some rabbiteye blueberries from Simmons Plant Farm and I had a few questions.

  1. They offer 1 year and 2 year old plants. Which are recommended? Is it better to get the younger plants in the ground fast, or should I just buy the bigger/old plants?

  2. They have Pink Lemonade blueberries listed as Northern Highbush. Is this just a mistake? I see them as rabbiteye everywhere else.

  3. Has anyone had experience with online orders from Simmons?

Thank you.

I have purchased 1 year plants and potted them up into 1 gallon containers and grown them out but never planted them directly into the field. They were small plants. I would buy the 2 year old plants if possible. These plants will produce fruit sooner and probably have a better survival rate too.

I grow Pink Lemonaid but I’m not sure if its technically a Rabbiteye or something else. Finch Nursery list it as a Rabbiteye but its parents are a Rabbiteye from Georgia and a blueberry from New Jersey which I’m guessing must be a NHB.

It requires low chill hours - around 300. In my area its more difficult to grow than a RE more like a SHB. NHB are not productive in my area

Never bought anything from Simmons

Thanks

It seems to have positive reviews.

The scoop on 'Simmons Berry Farm'.

When you want to check out a nusery, you can google Scoop on + the name of the nusery. A garden watch dog site will show you reviews from customers.

I’ve bought from them several times. Biggest plants with best root systems on blueberries that I’ve ever had from any nursery.
I always pay the extra dollar or two for the 1yr older plant.

I’ve bought a bunch of blackberry bare roots from them and a bunch of asparagus crowns. All was excellent! Just ordered a bunch of Ponca blackberries from them.

Thanks, that’s good to hear.
