Can anyone identify these pests

They are some kind of hard shelled egg I believe. Shaped like a small gray seed.

Yes, continuous overlapping eggs along a small branch or twig are typical of katydid.

How many katydid adults do you see around in the summer?

Tons of em. The trees are alive at night with their clicking sounds.
