I found a few old peach trees growing along the side of a state highway. The houses they grew next to are long gone and the sumac and cedars have taken over, but the peach trees have survived, and two of them are even bearing tiny peaches.
I’d guess the trees might have been planted in 1960s or the 1970s.
The peaches are tiny, a little over 2 inches wide, and the flesh is white and sweet. They ripened in early Sept (but maybe all the shade slowed down their harvest time). Despite being hedged all around by tall weeds and trees, the tree is still bearing heavily. This spring when I first found this tree, it had all these peach pits from the previous year thick on the ground under it. I’m going to graft some scions this winter so I can grow them in a more hospitable place.
Any ideas about what variety it might be?
