Canker on peach rootstock

I have a bare root peach tree. it has leaf out healthy otherwise. i notice a little oozing on the rootstock but no where else on the peach tree. If the canker was on branch i saw google recommended pruning it off. but what can i do for rootstock? will it eventually just kill the tree? any suggestion is appreciated. thank you.

Could it be a peach borer in the root stock? I have had them bad this year, right at the soil line

Borers this early? I thought they showed up in late summer? Yikes!

If your tree is in ground, I suspect borers, too.

I am in zone 6a, borers showed up last year the first week of April. @Seattlefigs is in zone 8, borers would be happily active.

What did you do for them?

I am not sure about on the west coast, yet on the east coast the more north you are the earlier the peach borers show up, they do come before now north enough, on the east coast anyway.

I suspect peach bores myself. Some advice for future years spray them, Try mid April. Spraying the trunk up to about the height of 12 inches. Also spray the ground over the roots well, at least a 24-inch diameter. Because they are there before they lay eggs in the tree trunk. Then spray again in August. We were told to use Malathion, use it at full strength.

ill have to take a photo of it tomorrow in daylight.i got it as a bareroot since November planted in a plastic pot. and today i just noticed it at the root stock. below the graft line. i was told by nursery sellers that we can plant as high as right under neath the graft line but i didnt so it is 4 inches of the root stock showing.and i dont think online nursery will help me with anything since disease and insects are not guaranteed!

I found them when I was digging peach trees from the nursery bed to transplant into permanent locations. They must have been there all winter, I followed their tunnels with a knife until I found them and squashed them

Seattle fig,

Peach tree borers are two year insects. In other words, they overwinter from the previous summer. They feed as soon as temps are warm enough to start moving.

It’s unlikely it’s borers on your tree since you bought it as bareroot last fall. Most likely it is a little canker.

People get worried about canker and panic. But it’s really not that big a deal. I have canker on some of my trees. I don’t give it a second look. As long as the tree is vigorous it stays ahead of the canker and keeps producing.

I understand it’s a bit different for colder climates. Fungal canker is a weird one in that it grows when the tree doesn’t. In other words, it likes cool weather and will grow when the tree is dormant. But it won’t grow when winter temps are too cool. Long falls and springs give canker more time to grow.

I’m not sure how peaches in pots deal with canker. But I suspect the same rules apply. Vigorous peach trees are the antidote. I wouldn’t become over stressed about it. I suppose if it’s bad enough it will girdle the tree, but I’ve not had that yet with any field grown trees.
