Ceanothus problems!

Ceanothus problems! This three year old ceanothus is looking very sick. I think it might be because of summer irrigation that it was on, but only sporadic. I just lost another (the picture of the dead one) for this same reason maybe? Does this look like a drowned plant? It didn’t get much water at all and the temps have been around 85-92. However, the soul is definitely moist when I check with a meter. We are inland San Diego, zone 10a. Anyway to save it? Should I dig it up and inspect the roots? It’s big. Thanks!

I’d dig up the dead one and see if the roots smell bad. If so, then bacterial root rot is the problem.

If this is the cultivar commonly sold in garden depts and nurseries it is water frugal but does not usually complain about extra water. Consider how often they get watered at Home Depot.
