Today, I picked the first melon of the season, Charlene. I’ve always had much apprehension about picking the first melon, never knowing whether it’s going to be ripe or not. Charlene is a charleston grey type which are always hard to judge, but with the first one, there’s always a risk. But to my surprise it was sweet and crunchy, the way I like them. I haven’t grown this variety in many years, and it will be a staple from now on. BTW it weighed 23 lbs.
