Cherry graft on peach w/o interstem

At what stage from ‘grafting’ to ,‘getting yummy cherries’, does cherry on peach become unviable?

I thought that even the graft will not take… Not knowing any better and filled with newbie exuberance, I did chip bud graft (clearly a poor one) of stella on peach last summer and graft took and is growing. I guess either this branch will die off or there will be no buds. Still fun.

Somewhat unrelated, peach graft on this peach tree of unknown origin has come out strong. Only time will tell if I get fruits.

Update #2. 75% of the peach on peach grafts took and the branch grown off these buds have had growth that I didn’t foresee. Each are 2-3 ft long and 1/2 inch thick. I wonder if this crazy growth has to do with too much nitrogen in fertilizer Here is three of them - will need prune off all but one [PXL_20230604_001006861~3] I guess it doesn’t have to be perfect fit as long as (a) knife is sanitized properly and (b) some portion of cambium is in touch and (c) you wrap it around with Parafilm …
