Cherry Tree Hole Damage

This Cherry tree is in bad shape. The bark is peeling from possible sun exposure. But what would drill such a perfect hole in it? It’s pencil sized and goes atleast 2 feet deep. I saw fresh wood shavings a day before.

Woodpecker? Anything stuffed inside? How high up?

Most of the socal woodpeckers should leave very precise looking boreholes, but you said it was already peeling…

It goes at least 2 feet up. I doubt a woodpecker could go that deep. Almost looks like someone drilled that hole!

Carpenter bee ?

That sounds plausible. I’ve seen them around a lot.

I had a carpenter bee drill up into my rake unbeknownst to me. When I used it in the fall, I found out that was the bee’s new home because she bit the fire out of me, lol.
