Does anyone out there know if improved chickasaw(P. angustofolia) varieties can be grafted onto mexican plum(P. mexicana) rootstocks?
Also can these two species cross-pollinate?

I believe it’s YES to both questions.
Well this is great!
I found a couple wild Mexican plum trees growing, and I was hoping to graft into it with some improved Chickasaw varieties.
I think Arthur Lee Jacobsen had some P. mexicana x P. cerasifera hybrids he thought highly of.
Fascinating. I wonder how it tastes. And I will have to research Arthur Lee Jacobson; I don’t believe I have heard of him before.
Had? Is he not still alive? I love his Trees of Seattle and Wild Plants of Greater Seattle, both of which I use pretty regularly. I would be happy to try anything he thinks (thought?) highly of.
I e-mailed him early this summer, it’s the trees which are not around, anymore. Planted at houses that were sold and new owners cut down…
What a shame. But glad to hear he’s alive and well!
Likely compatible for grafting, whether they have similar blossom periods close enough for cross pollination will likely determine if they can serve the purpose you may have in mind
Keep us informed about results. I grafted a Mexican plum this year so next year I should know how it matches other in my collection
