@smsmith if spring grafts don’t work out I’d be happy to send you bud wood in Aug!

Very nice of you to offer. I’m hoping at least one scion takes, but grafting this early with non dormant scions…I kind of doubt it.

How does Turnbull compare with Korean giant? I already decided on Korean Giant. But should I try the Turnbull ?

Fusionpower blessed me with Diamond, Warren and Fanstil.

I picked out Potomac, Spaulding and a few other disease resistant types. And a handful of Asians. Plus I have Moonglow, Summer Blood Birne and a Bartlett.

Turnbull has an interesting flavor that didn’t really appeal to me…sweet but also a sour/slight astringency. Id take Korean Giant anyday, but I know not everyone has the same palatte as me

on that rootstock it’s probably going to produce a insane crop for you. mine are on m111 and B118.

How does Clark’s crab compare to others for codling moth preference? I’m no spray, so trying to avoid adding more codling moth magnets like liberty. Also, has anyone tried this apple for hard cider yet?

@Iowa

One of the secrets to Clarks crab is it ripens later and avoids early insect pressure.

I can’t take credit for the great genetics these apples have that credit belongs to God. Pointing out the many benefits to an apple i grew out is rewarding because there is an investment in time. Im glad that this many people get to enjoy them. Hopefully you graft 500 of them and breed them more! You can do whatever you want with them and have a clear conscience.

The blossoms on my two are just starting to open here in NW Ohio. Second leaf for both of them, hoping to get a couple to taste this year.

They are very fast coming into production. It may take another year or two until they are at their best. They are very addictive once i start eating them! I llove them!

One of my young own root ‘Clark’s Crab’ trees is starting to bloom. Almost every single node that is pushing growth has a flower cluster, all up and down the stems. Meanwhile, my MUCH larger ‘Clark’s Crab’ that was top worked on an established in ground rootstock has only a small amount of flower clusters as it still seems to be focusing mostly on growth. For as many apples as can be made to fruit faster with certain rootstock, ‘Clark’s Crab’ doesn’t need the help. It’s very precocious without any help from rootstock. I bet it would be suitable for growing in planters for folks who are limited on space cause it would still produce.

I suspect you are right, it would be a perfect city apple. On its own roots it was a natural dwarf in my experience. I’m hoping people will grow out the seeds which will produce many combinations of similar desirable apples. Within 10 years there may be thousands of such seedlings in our community. @Seannosis how are your apples doing? @Richard how is clarks crabapple doing for you lately?

I really want to graft your crab onto a seedling sized rootstock (own-rooted Bramely’s seedling is my number 1 choice)
And pluck every blossom off for 4-5 years to see how truly massive it could get

@Phlogopite

This apple will work you hard plucking off blooms. It will be determined to fruit.

We need to cross pollinate Clark’s crab with the Sieversii Malus apples coming from Kazakhstan and see what we get. I just ordered some scion from Cummins nursery and plan to do just that in coming years!
