Confess: what have you ordered for spring 26?

Well, sow exotic took one plant (that I really wanted!) off my hands…apparently they don’t reserve plants when you purchase them for delayed shipping. They only shipped me what was left in stock. Come on. Mehrabyan order is somewhat a mess, and I regret the entire thing. I could have gotten it all between Cummins and ACN, I was just interested in trying/supporting them given the positives reviews. Isons shows up Thursday, hoping it works out better, and I don’t go 3 for 3 on fails this week.

Notable Positives:

• Mail order natives plants last week were beautiful.
• I only have one more fruit-related order to ship that is a citrus I deliberately put at the end of April to not have to deal with amidst my project push time.
• Aside from potentially replacing any Mehrabyan trees that don’t survive, I cannot fathom ordering anymore trees. I have scions and a few berry plants on my 27 list and it WILL remain that way!

I was done till I heard about early gold rush. And then I found a trade I wanted. Then I ordered just one more….

I got my last order in last week.. from Indiana berry.. 3 Anne golden raspberry, 3 Caroline raspberry.

Everything that was bought has been planted.

I still have a few grafts to get done. Giboshi (Smiths Best) to a wild DV out in my orchard. The rootstock is just now at the swolen bud stage.

Centennial crab apple… may get that one done today to a couple different rootstocks.

I have some Clarks Mulberry to graft.. but my rootstock is not ready yet. It came out early and got frosted… just now starting to show green again.

For actual plants I have 2 seedling hazelnuts for my chicken run and an american plum to pair with the one I have already growing here…both are from Fedco.

I have abunch of purchased apple and pear rootstocks to save my girdled trees. But in addition I’ve added more scion…

As for pawpaws…I have a lot of scion to graft. The ones I can mention are Shenandoah, Lehman 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, Wabash, Rappahannock, Canary, Caspian, Danae Creekside, Sidewinder, (Mammoth X 2-10) X 2-10, Pomper’s, Dunnigan, Asterion, Atria, Betria, Canopus, Gatria, Rigel, IA Golden, Plymouth, Homestead, Mango X Wabash, 2-10 X Summer Delight.

Mehrabyan order is somewhat a mess

I got my order from they yesterday and everything looked good. 6 plums and a peach tree. Most were whips of good caliper, but a few had some branching. OK, but not massive root systems. I spent today getting it in-ground, so I didn’t have a chance to measure them, but I would guess most are in the 5/8 to 3/4” caliper range and topped at 4’ tall.

Cumberland Valley and Bullrock nursery delivered a while ago. Ison’s should arrive on Saturday. I’m still waiting for Burnt Ridge and Peaceful Heritage.

Figs for some flippin reason I thought I would give potted figs a try. But….. as with all fruit I could not just try one, I had to buy 8.

Got a few pollinator attractors at the local plant sale. Foxglove, Texas sage (two in one pot!), amsonia, hyssops, etc.

Burnt Ridge emailed to let me know that they’re getting their seaberries in at the end of April and should start shipping then. I’m excited to get those plants in the ground before it gets too terribly hot here.

Plants came in yesterday. Seaberry is huge! Like 3 or 4 feet long. I see they’re done for the season or I would be ordering another bundle.

I think I have them sexed correctly. I used Sean from Edible Acres’ video on the subject. I’ll be putting them and the golden currants in the ground today.

I added fresh Jewel strawberry and my Malwina wasn’t shipped. I mowed the old strawberries and let grass take over last year. For blueberries I added Ka-Bluey, Clockwork, Top Shelf and an extra Hannah’s Choice. I also added a Drippin’ Honey pear. I’m about finished accumulating and will be swapping some things around in the blueberry area. My big disappointments are KSU Atwood pawpaw (uneven ripening) and Nectafest nectarine (big tree, pathetic yield).

I totally forgot that I had placed an order with Tripple Brook Farm back in like Nov. 2025 for Clumping Dragon Head Bamboo and Akebia (male and female). The order arrived this week. On the way I have:

I also ordered seeds from True Leaf Market (TLM) for the first time. Most notably I order over 40 varieties of melon (because this is the “year of the melon”).

Also ordered seeds, asparagus and rhubarb crowns from Urban Farmer (UF). The crowns were ok, not bad, but not what Nourse Farms probably would have sent either.

Anyway, I have been ordering from UF for 3 or 4 years now. This year, for the first time ever, they forgot to enclose my rhubarb crowns. I contacted them via email and also called and left a message. They responded to my email in a reasonable amount of time… I’d even say fairly quickly for a seed/nursery in the thick of spring shipping. They apologized and let me know that they would get my crowns out right away. I had them 3 days later. Awesome customer service!

A few other things to note about them: they always offer free shipping for orders of $200 or more AND they ship FAST. I ordered from TLM and UF on the same Monday. I had my order from UF that same Friday. I didn’t get my order from TLM until the next Friday, which is not horrible, but still not better than UF.

Also ordered a few things from Sistah Seeds and quite a few seeds from Experimental Farm Network. Here’s some rice, rye and sesame that I started from seed I ordered from them:

Thanks for the nursery rundowns. Have you grown sesame before? If so how did it go? And be sure to let us all know about all the melons as you grow them!

I found it very easy to grow. Although it’s hard to separate the seeds from the pod.
