Stopped by Costco Monday and saw that they have citrus and bare root stone fruit.
I got one of the citrus that I was looking for - an Owari Satsuma. I’m out of room to plant it in the ground, so this will stay in a pot. I plan to take cuttings off of it and graft them to the lemon.
There was also a “Clementine”. I did a search on it, but have not found the harvest time. I think they are early, but don’t know how it compares to the Satsuma.
Edit:
U of CA COOP has Satsuma as Dec-April and Clementine as Feb-April
U of TX has Satsuma as Nov - Dec and Clementine as Oct-Nov
Interesting, Satsuma first in CA, but Clementine first in Texas?
Nicely done, perhaps if you contact the nursery they will tell you the rootstock. I just bought a Frost Owari Satsuma on Sour Orange rootstock last week. I’m hoping it’ll do well in my alkaline soil since sour orange was popular in Texas for that purpose.
Can I ask you about your intended container culture for it? I may keep it in a pot to begin with, although I’m not sure what size to pot it in.
Also how do mandarins do on lemon rootstock? I air layered something that seems to be a lemon but I have a Meyer now so it might make a good rootstock.
I sure hope those costco trees are on sour orange (which is the rootstock that works here in Phoenix). Costco frequently supplies citrus and deciduous fruit trees on totally inappropriate rootstock for our area. Many many a time I see people in line all proud of the alberta peach they have in thier cart. Id let them know that its a high chill peach that will NEVER fruit here but they will just look at me blankly. Costco is just like all the other predatory retailers that could give a rip if you are successful with what you buy from them.
If you are interested in quality citrus that will still be fruiting tons in 50 years, go see our two only propagating nurseries in town. www.rsigrowers.com or http://greenfieldcitrus.com/ Both will sell you a excellent citrus tree on rootstock that will perform here.
Hi Eric.
I picked up the Kinnow that’s visible in the photo to the left of the Satsuma from Greenfield. It’s on a sour orange and went in the ground on Monday.
I got on the Frantz website, but it does not list the rootstock. I did not look for a rootstock tag on the Clementine, as it was not on my list. But, based on Patty’s recommendation I think I’ll grab one and keep it in a pot.
Still looking for a Gold nugget for a late season mandarin.
Tell me about it. I live in z5a and I see Dorsett Golden (a Bahamian apple) almost every year at Home Depot. The best I can figure is that they have it confused with’Golden Delicious’. Peaches on ‘Nemagarde’ a rootstock that has no chance in this area are common.
For the life of me, I can’t understand how a big box store with their logistical prowess could screw up so consistently, year after year.
I picked up a Clementine Friday and put both it and the Owari in pots yesterday. When I pulled off the big tag around the trunk, I found root stock tags.
The Owari says CLNCZO and the Clementine has FOWCZO. So, it looks like carrizo root stock. Not sure what CLN and FOW mean. Anybody know?
That’s the same as here near Portland. About the only trees at our Costco that have a chance are the apples. Half of the other trees they sell are apricots that won’t set, peaches that will curl, and the like.
Does sour orange work because your area has presumably high pH? And does it have trouble with phytophthora in your experience? I forget but I think that’s what it’s susceptible to.
