Not much you can plant outside in Mississippi right now. But the cowpeas love it. Planted 8/2; these are Lady peas that I’ve grown and saved seed from the last couple of years. Looks like I need to get in here and thin. Drip tubing was in this bed from previous determinate tomatoes but these things really don’t need it. They are tough hombres.

Nice. I’m trialing two varieties of cowpea here in NY 6b. Fast Lady and Grey Speckled Palapye. They’re growing well and both are already making mature peas in mid August.

These are Fast Lady! I’m hotter than you but I have harvested these in 49 days. Pretty incredible.

Wow, that’s insane!
I’m at about 73 days and the pods are just starting to dry down. Which is actually quite fast for a dry bean of any kind, in this climate.
I grow Purple Hull Pinkeye and there are some volunteer Top Pick Pinkeye that pop up every year. The Top Picks are smaller plants but don’t go as crazy, the Purple Hulls keep vining out whenever they touch something. Been harvesting for the last month and a half now though. Have to pick them when they turn full purple and just starting to dry or they mold on the plant. Just too rainy this year, which is a good thing all things considered.

This is all great! I need to get into cowpeas next year for my burning hot garden spots. What are people’s favorite for a chili bean? For a creamy bean that blends well (like for a hummus)? Cow pea that holds a nice texture for salads?

I have never dried. I blanch and freeze. But to each their own. Good luck. Report back on flavor. It’s a family favorite here.

I actually planted some cowpeas this year for the first time. They came up and have since disappeared!
