Crabapple ID/safe to eat?

I originally posted here a few years ago when I planted what I thought was a dolgo crabapple bareroot. 3 years later and it’s about 12ft tall and has had its first bloom this spring. It grew a whopping 6 apples, all fairly large. They look nothing like photos of dolgo crabapples I’ve seen. The apples are around 2.5”-3” diameter and yellow/reddish.

Quick tree health background, it had cedar apple rust spring of 2019 and 2020. This year I sprayed in spring with immunox and the rust was much better this year.

First question, based on the photos can anyone ID them?

Second and more importantly, are these safe to eat with the dark tops and yellow splotches in a few spots on some?

Looks like they might have some sooty blotch which you can polish off if you want. Not a big deal. Try them out and see how they are. The ones that have more of a yellow undertone rather than green might be more ripe.

About the baddest thing that could happen might be diarrhea…from eating green apples, or too many apples.
Other than that,
no harm that I can think of.

(Can’t ID…but it’s big for a crab apple.)

Thanks all! Any idea what these might be? I was warned after the fact about buying trees from Tyty and that it “might not even be a dolgo”. Looks like they might have been right.

Closest I can see is maybe a Kerr or a Shafer. Or maybe just some kind of regular apple tree.

So we tried a few this morning, eaten fresh. They were a very tasty apple. Fairly sweet and also somewhat tart as well. Nothing like any crabapple I’ve tried before. Now I’m going to dive into determining what kind of tree this is.

My seedling tree…first to bear fruit as seedling on it’s root and not grafted…is cherry sized, no red flesh, sour and anstingent. So, it gets grafted over in the spring. Already has Green Pippen grafted as it’s central leader.
(I still think Y.D. is probably a parent.)

It’s not toxic, but the scabby areas might be bitter. Just peel it off.
And Crabapples tend to be more bitter and astringent than Larger Apples.
