Crape Myrtle Pruning

New crape myrtle was buck rubbed severely last fall, so I pruned it down below the damage.

Each trunk had one strong leader, so I cut the weaker lower growth. The leaders themselves are already branching.

However, if my goal is a typical crape myrtle form with bare trunk up 3-5 feet or so, should I let these laterals grow all season and remove this winter? Or should I cut them now?

My gut says leave them to maximize foliage, and prune later.

I am no expert but i would leave all the growth until winter to maximize the strength of the tree until winter dormancy.
