Picked up my trees from CVN this past Thursday. Four varieties of crabapples and a plum tree. Some had to be trimmed back to fit in the box. Great size and great root systems. Always good quality from CVN. 9 trees for $45. No one can beat their prices.
Hard to see how they make ends meet. Undocumented workers, partly, I imagine.
Still…it’s the place some local Kentucky retail outlets buy plants and put them in pots and can retail them for $16 or something like that at the garden centers.
(Such as one in Somerset, KY and one in Corbin, KY).
They grew out almost 1 million trees this year. And they grow other crops on field rotation and make money on those crops, too. They’re also the primary grower for Gurneys and Henry Fields. They seem to be doing pretty well. I’m just glad they’re close enough I can just drive over there ![]()
Edited to add that I do get a bit of a discount from buying on location. But even if you order over the phone and have the trees shipped, their prices are still far below everyone else. Vaughn Nursery may be close, but I haven’t bought from them in a few years.
Rob- Would you mind taking pics of the CVN catalog to show the rest of us?
Thanks, Jerry!
And even though the catalog says it, there is no minimum order.
Thank you
I got a new catalog emailed to me yesterday. Not much new that i can see… actually alot of out of stocks and a note that says due to drought some trees are smaller than normal. Maybe someone will post the catalog and a new thread. Prices are similar if not the same.
They always have more than what they list in the brochure. You just need to call and ask. I’ll be going back first of the year to pick up more trees.
Edited to add that, yes, we had a very dry summer this year. The cicada damage didn’t help.
Does anyone here know if CVN released their newest catalog yet?
I called them a month or two back and asked to get added to the mailing list for their newest catalog, but I hadn’t seen anything yet
Just wondering if maybe they put my address down wrong, Worth the new catalog just hasn’t been out yet.
If anyone has the new one can you post the PDF?
New Catalog
If anyone is still deciding what to order, do so quickly. I placed my order today and they are out of a lot of peaches and have none of the other fruit types left (nectarine, plum, apple, etc). They also aren’t estimating anything bigger than the 12-18" grade.
I also called Vaughn nursery and they are completely out of trees. They didn’t have a good crop this year.
I spoke with Nick at CVN and they won’t have everything dug until next month. They do have apples and pears ready now. I didn’t ask about peaches or available sizes. I just drive over there and pick everything up when it’s ready.
Maybe they were just going by their predictions of inventory, rather than actual counts. But, I went down my list and the woman I spoke with gave a yea or neigh for each variety. Of the ~14 varieties I had listed, they had 5. I got 2 of each, as I was planning on 10 trees, some of them to be grafted over.
She did say that haven’t done a full inventory/grading yet and asked if I wanted to get bigger ones if they were available, which I of course said “yes, please” to.
List I was interested in (bolded is what I was able to reserve):
- EveRes Ruby
- Ruston Red
- May Joy
- Cardinal Joy
- Rich Joy
- Sunglo
- Effie
- Ozark Mango
- Sweet Joe
- Indian Cling
- Spring Satin
secondary options:
- Liberty Joy
- Crimson Joy
- China Pearl
- Big Red
Sounds like it could be easier if you are local. But, I’m still pretty happy to get these trees at a reasonable price vs spending $53 per tree at ToA or $35 per tree at ACN.
The front staff are nice, but they are not that knowledgeable about inventory or what they grow. They are just looking at a list, that could be outdated or just not updated with current inventory. The only way to get the most accurate information is to speak directly with the owner.
They haven’t got everything dug yet and certainly not shipped. As far as I could tell they still or will have most trees available.
Maybe if I was ordering thousands of trees I could justify speaking with the owner. Ordering just 10, I felt bad taking up too much time from the woman who answered the phone. She may not have all the info, but it really sounded like off the top of her head she knew almost all of the answers. There was only one she had to check on for a minute. Maybe I’ll call back in a month and see if I can add a couple of the others, though there are only so many trees I can fit.
The owner is nice and doesn’t mind helping with questions. Even if you want just one tree
. Let me know if you’d like it and I can IM his contact info.
