The leaves on both of my first-year fig trees have started to curl up slightly into a bowl shape. They are two different species (Black Jack and Panache). Other than the curling, there doesn’t appear to be anything else wrong with the leaves. Is this normal behavior? If not, any idea what may be causing it?

The tree looked healthy. I wouldn’t worry about it. Sometimes heat stress will cause the leaves to drupe.

It’s a heat/sun/water/root issue. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on. But it’s usually not serious. Some varieties are more prone to curl like that than others. Maltese Beauty is most prone to curl in my experience.

I’m in the SF Bay Area. Other than a 4-day heatwave 6 weeks ago, it’s been unusually cool weather this summer (highs in the low-to-mid 70s). Could that be the cause? The curling didn’t start appearing until a little over a week ago.

I won’t think so. But don’t worry about it. I’ve had plenty of it and can’t see any issues with growth or production.
