I just planted two varieties of June bearing strawberries (Camarosa and Chandler), and I’m considering adding one more variety of either a Day Neautral or Everbearing. Which would you suggest?
I’ve never had it myself, but I don’t think you can go wrong with Mara Des Bois
Thanks
I’m doing Mara Des Bois and Albion this year. I did Seascape last year and while they did produce all summer the flavor was disappointing. Some were awesome but the vast majority didn’t have the sweetness I was expecting. I read here or on another forum that Seascape needs a couple years to start getting good so I’m giving it one more season before I decide what to do with it.
I have Seascape and Albion and like both. Seascape is quite a bit more productive and makes more, but smaller, strawbs than Albion does. It grows and runners much more aggressively as well
Albion makes noticeably fewer strawbs than Seascape does but they are much larger.
I admit the nuances of strawberry flavors is somewhat lost on me but both are an equal delight at peak ripeness
Huh… my Seascape were huge the last few years as 1 year roots.
I’ve found Seascape and other heavy everbearing varieties like more fertilizer throughout the season for it to bring out the best flavors.
I don’t like mara des bois. I’ve found it to be too small overall and not as productive. I’m only keeping 1 plant for myself just to have it
Earliglow is probably my fave junebearing… i grew it years ago and am growing it again. Sparkle is a close second. I like Sparkle for fresh eating and making jam and also freezing…to me its very similar to Earliglow just a bit more firm which i do like.
I grew both mara and charlotte and thought that they tasted very good… however i liked Sweet Kiss alot more. I think Sweet Kiss is probably my favorite all around strawb… and ive grown alot of them. I am not the best at growing them however and have failed at 3 large beds of them…i wont do that again.
I need to grow Rutgers Scarlet again… im a fan of it also.
if you like earliglow try galleta. earliglow is one of its parents. same great taste but bigger berries and more productive. evie 2 is a good ever bearer. its also very productive and doesnt slow down in the heat. maras are good but are low production and the bugs get bad in them. im trialing flavorfest right now. should get 1st berries this summer.
I’m still considering several of the suggestions but evie 2 looks promising. It gets very hot at my location and I like the idea of it producing larger berries.
I’m new to strawberries but have Albion, Flavorfest and sequoia coming in a week. The sequoia I specifically got for a hot deck. The Flavorfest and Albion I’ve read in some published paper show more fungal disease resistance. Would love to hear real life what they’re like- great to know Albion are yum.
My seascapes were very sensitive to heat. They produced in June then stopped and then set fruit in October only to be frosted long before ripe. My June bearers were much more productive.
