Can anyone tell me what is causing my apples to be deformed in shape?

One possibility, Brown Marmorated stink bugs.

In VA, I see similar damage on my 25 ft apple tree (I cannot spray this tree due to size).

According to below (I believe more midwest resource), some damage could be caused by Tarnished Plant Bug or PC. I definitely have PC and Tarnished Plant Bug is said to be in East Coast but I have not caught one in the act yet.

Tarnished Plant bugs is a strong possibility indeed.

If you click on the link I posted, it gave you suggestion on what to do.

Thank you Mamuang.

Below is what they reccomend. But what insecticide would work best I wonder?

  • If needed, apply insecticide Tight Cluster to Pink bud stage. Use of synthetic pyrethroids may lead to outbreak of European red mites since these insecticides are harmful to beneficial mites.
  • Control may be enhanced by spraying insecticide on a warm, sunny, calm day when TPB are most active.
  • Destroying broad leaf weed hosts in and around the orchard in the fall may decrease overwintering TPB.
  • Avoid mowing or using herbicide between Pink and Petal Fall because disturbance of alternate hosts in the groundcover may cause TPB to move into apple trees.
