Scientists that created cotton candy grapes develop new kind of cherry

Club cherries now?

Their claim that most cherries up until now require 800-1,000 chill hours is well, amusing. Zaiger has had a wide range of sweet cherries with 200-1000 chill hr requirement for years if not decades.

I did try Cotton Candy grapes, their creation, yesterday. Very sweet but soft. Could just be the batch. Flavor, mostly just sweet.

Yeah the grapes are a novelty at best. Wouldn’t want to eat a whole bunch of them.

Assuming traditional growing areas are getting less chill as time goes on, we can assume folks will continue to develop lower chill, high quality fruit tree varieties.

This information came out at the beginning of 2023, presumably in time for the World Ag Expo. The Yahoo story is old news.

If they can get chill hrs lower than existing cherries that would be useful. I can’t see any advantage to messing with cherry taste except as a novelty.
