Dialing in your Scion storage

USDA Summer Budwood just arrived. I was half expecting to get winter scions since I missed the deadline by 1 day and ordered in the 16th. But they read notes here they are.

The only notice I had was UPS delivery update last night. So today I was thinking about where to store them.

The Middle drawer “Flex Zone” in my fridge would be the perfect choice It can be dialed into the magic zone between 33F - 40F quite easily. Only problem is the main fridge is having an issue I think I can fix but till then its warm and not reliable. So our Flex Zone is a no go.

I usually use my wine fridge set to 39F. But it displays 44F regularly

That leaves the basement drink fridge.

This is how I checked and dialed the fridge in.

Im Using this wireless meat probe for my smoker.

One probe is in the wine fridge the other in the basement fridge

The drink fridge is clearly a no go. The fridge is set to 39F and displays 44F which is apparently accurate. It cycles off for several hours and the temps rise to 55F for a while before dropping back down.

The basement fridge hit a stead 39F but would go up 40+ for a while after someone opens it for a drink. It holds preaty stead before going back down to 39F. I moved the control a little more to the cold and I am now gettng a steady 36F.

If you want a good multi function way of dialing in your storage try an Inkbird INT-14-BW

Each probe gives you the internal temperature of the meat of course but also the air temp outside the probe. Never have to trust that one built in temperature gauge on the smoker again.

Probe has been in the fridge for 2 days now and is down to 70% charge. The probe is supposed to last 25 hours in a smoker. I suppose it lasting longer in the fridge. at this rate it will last 7 days. The Probe ports to the base and the base connects both with Bluetooth and Wifi so I can obsess over fridge temps while on vacation next week.

Mentioned going out of town for week. So I though about testing the performance of my 12V cooler.

Not great, temps came down from 97 to 48 with the internal air getting to 46.

These units are not designed to be extremely cold. I put some Ice in and going to see once it goes down will it stay down.

Block of cheese so I am measure the food temp not the ice.

These go on sale every so often for $16 2packs (i even use them in the freezer).
Can open and read the temp (as the Bluetooth alot of times can’t get signal when fridge closed). I used them to hone the fridge dial to the temp i wanted (as I had scionwood both in a regular expensive fridge but also in a cheap college dorm fridge [where the freezer bin is directly on top of fridge shelfs, so wasn’t sure which shelf had the best temp… i just put on top shelf under the freezer and all scionwood seemed fine, even if it got a bit frozen sometimes around the 34-36F temps I had] … i prefered this since alot of Plum/Apricot/Asian+HybridPersimmon wood (even Pawpaw) would start to push bud early and I thought it would be best to put in a colder spot than in our regular fridge that gets opened/closed alot. It stopped pushing bud and all grafted successfully once i put the problematic scionwood closer to freezing temps):

The only wood that didn’t seem to need the cold temps was American Persimmon but I also grafted those very late this year (late May into late July), so i moved those as well to the more freezing temps.

More hardcore is these where the temp sensor part goes outside the fridge/freezer (i would trust the notification alarm of these more since the signal can actually reach your phone without opening the door, but i don’t own this product [from the same company]):

The duel function and i assume long battery life for way less then the smoker probes.

Can get even cheaper if you search around like I do.

But I had the smoker probes and the package arriving the next day so I am far from upset.
