Did you every screw up and cut off a scion you grafted when pruning a tree?

I once grafted over a bird-planted mulberry tree along a shared fence line with five different varieties, for a total of about fifteen grafts. I grafted only the branches on my side, though the tree itself was on my neighbor’s property. The neighbor, an avid gardener, was looking forward to sharing the mulberries. A year later, the person they hired to trim the trees did me a “favor” and cut every branch on my side. Sad day—but I definitely learned a lesson.

I just cracked Buzz’s Favorite off a bench grafted persimmon while watering yesterday. I put it in a bag to re-graft a few more.

I once walked into a tree and broke off a branch — which proved to have been my only successful graft from the year before. Wah! :sob:

The lesson I learned from that is that Frankentrees probably aren’t ideal for a person who is very clumsy and prone to doing stuff like that. It’s not the first time I’ve accidentally broken off a branch while walking past a fruit tree. I decided I would rather go with a whole bunch of pruned-to-be-short trees planted very closely together, rather than multi-grafting the same stem. That way, if I break off any one particular branch again, it’ll be okay.

Yep………more than once

Another reason why it’s important to tag/label your grafts.
