Do all your chainsaws leak out the bar oil when sitting?

I’ve had a bunch of Stihl saws. Every one of them leaked the bar oil out. Also have a Stihl pole saw and had an Echo pole saw. Everything leaks terribly.

Do all your chainsaws leak out the bar oil when sitting?

Mine does. the shelf that it sits on has a nice slick under the reservoir. If there is some secret to storing it without that happening I’m not aware of it.

I think all mine do, even the Dewalt battery powered ones. There’s a position you can leave them so they don’t. I think my Stihls do better than most.

Haven’t noticed much if any leakage from my gas Stihl saw.. A dewalt battery saw leaked like crazy though.. Until I read that it’s proper to store the saw laying on it’s side, in the same orientation you’d put it to pour oil in.

Both of my dad’s electric and gas chainsaw leak oil. Thought there was something wrong with them lol. Guess it’s normal.

My stihl saw also leaks so I store it with the oil reservoir cap up and this prevents the leak.

yep. store them on their sides and they wont or barely leak.

That’s a known issue, and it causes a lot of frustration for DeWalt owners. There is actually a YouTube video showing why it leaks, and it’s because of poor construction. The fix is simple but time-consuming, unfortunately.

My Echo gas powered saw doesn’t leak bar oil.

All of my Stihl saws have leaked. Like Steve mentioned, store them on the side with the bar side up. Have not noticed my Echo cs-2511T leaking. Which btw is a hard to beat saw if you need a top handle.

I learned chainsaws should be stored on their side, if they are stored with bar oil in the reservoir. The bar oil cap is sealed, so no biggie storing cap side down.

Hope this helps

My Stihl does not leak. You might need a new seal or cap

Yep, giant puddle of bar oil under my Ryobi electric saw. I thought it was because I had set it down facing the wrong direction.

My electric chainsaws both leak chain oil.

Thanks for this tip! I have never had a stihl leak but went and got too old so switched everything out for Milwaukee battery powered and dang they leak! I thought they were mismanufactured lol! Going out now to re orient them. Much appreciated

I just drain the reservoir into a bar oil container when I’m done with the saw (tip it over, 15 sec max). Have to top it up anyway when I go to use it next, so it isn’t much of a problem. That takes care of most of it. :+1:
