Anyone have firsthand knowledge if junipers cause any ill effects on fruit trees?
Yes junipers are a primary host for CAR. I had some big problems with junipers and had to chop some down. Juniper is also known as eastern red cedar. These names totally baffle me I must say.
Juniper is a genus containing roughly a dozen species, some of which are shrubs. Eastern Red Cedar (Juniper virginiana) is one of those species, a medium-sized tree.
… but it’s not a cedar!!
I looked it up and some early settler stuck the wrong name on it and it stuck.
LOL. Well, OK. But then a May Apple is not an apple. A Jerusalem Artichoke is not an artichoke. Horseradish is not a radish. We could go on . . . .
Thanks! I was considering a couple, but CAR was absolutely my fear.
Douglas Fir is not a fir. Tulip poplar is not a poplar.
The list goes on and on. It can get confusing.
Tulip poplar is not a poplar.
There ya go. It must be a Tulip…lol
The Latin names are correct, its the American names that are not always correct . The Latin names often give in mini-description also. Ie. Mulberry/Morus from the Latin word mora, meaning “delayed” describes that the tree buds out later in the spring than most other trees.
The main reason for using Latin names for plants (or animals) is that the so-called English name, or common name, for a particular plant is not the same everywhere, causing a lot of confusion. This is the reason horticulturists and other scientists always use Latin names in their work.
THIS is the answer to your question!
We have so many Eastern Red Cedars in our area that it’s pointless to try to cut them down. Instead we grow apple varieties that are resistant to it, and thus don’t have a problem. Enterprise, Liberty, Roxbury Russet, etc.
One spray of myclobutanil at petal fall completely controls it so that is the other option. At some point I gave up on the chopping down approach and switched to that.
