Do you have to wait for the tops to fall over before you can harvest onions?

I’ve harvested my garlic already. Most of the onions were flowering so I picked them early. There’s a few onions left with many of the leaves dead, however there’s still some upright green, and the neck is not falling over. These onions are blocking my next season’s seedlings from being planted. Can I pick them know? If it’s too early, how long will they last until I can use them?
Thanks!

can’t tell if its too early without knowing details where and when you planted. Check the neck with your index finger and thumb, if it’s soft harvest them and cure for couple of weeks.

I’m not sure the effects on storage, but if they are going to be eaten soon, you can pick them any time. I’m surprised your garlic is done. I’m just starting to see scapes on mine. It’ll be at least a month until harvest.

Maybe half the scapes on mine are fully extended, and another half are just coming out. But more than half the leaves or more are dead on all the garlic, and the cloves have some definition.
My seedlings have been waiting for three weeks to use the same plot of ground, so I need to rush them along too.
