Do you like trialing new fruits and vegetables? Also, if you grow honeyberries, you may be interested

Hey Growing Fruit friends! A few weeks ago a friend of mine sent me a link to sign up for some trials that an organization called SeedLinked is running. Here are links to a few of them that are still open:

# 2024 SKC Tomato Breeding - Cherry Nature and Nurture

# 2024 SKC Red Bell Pepper DHxWL Breeding Trial

On each of those pages there are a few other trials listed that might also be available.

These are volunteer trials, they provide the plants in exchange for information from you about how they grow in your region.

If you are growing honeyberries and have at least 2 varieties with at least 5 plants per variety (example: 5 Beauty shrubs and 5 Beast shrubs) that are fruiting, you might be eligible for this trial:

It is a 2 year commitment and there is a $200.00 stipend each year.

I don’t work for SeedLink or the folks who got the SARE grant for the honeyberry trial, so if you have any questions, you may need to contact SeedLink or the SARE grantees. I’m just passing along information to folk who I think might be interested.

I like trying new fruit but I do recognize there is a place in the garden for staples too. I heard someone say that 80% of the garden should be staples that you know you will love and the other 20% should be trial based. This statement holds true with my garden as it is things I know I like such as apples, Euro pears, apricot, pluot, pecan, raspberries, strawberry and asparagus. I have things I have tried and liked but are uncommon or things I have not tried like seaberry, mulberry, persimmon and a Peacotum. Sometimes you find something that grows well and tastes great like mulberry. Other time it is like pawpaw and it is a massive failure every time. I will also say growing is much different than buying. Growing you get to deal with the negatives of growing each plant and buying it you are more concerned about cost and taste. It has been 4 years and I am still yet to get a cherry or peach due to frost issues.
