Do you use the same container mix for potted figs as you do for other potted fruit trees?
@Zone6
I mix one 1.5 cu.ft. bag of outdoor potting soil with one 1/2 cu.ft. (50 lb) of all-purpose sand for use in pots containing fruit trees.
I’m guessing the OP needs to bring the pots indoors/shelter them in the Winter, while Richard can leave his outside year round? Would a somewhat fine perlite work OK too in those proportions and be less not fun if you have to move a bunch of pots around? Sand is pretty heavy stuff.
I use the same soil for everything except blueberries. My soil is one part peat or coir or potting mix which is mostly a pH balanced peat. One part garden soil or a good compost.
1/2 part DE the size of perlite. You can use up to two parts but at least 1/2. It’s expensive if you have a lot of plants. As I keep decreasing mine I use more DE. 3 parts pine bark fines or bonsai soil or other barks like pine. Also add one cup time release fertilizer. I find this jump starts things. I also add some on top in the spring. I have found this mixture works for me. I like using compost as I like to jump start bacteria in pot. It’s a myth imo that organic fertilizer won’t work in pots.in my experience it works very well. I use both organics and time release. I also add mulch when I have time.
I would avoid sand because of the weight.
But it does work good if you don’t mind the weight.
Yes, I have to take inside for the winter.
What is DE?
I read people use bark in the mix. Do any of you use bark?
Diatomaceous earth. As mentioned bark is the main ingredient in my mix. I have been using this mix for ten years. I’m extremely happy with results.
I like to use Optisorb for DE. It has the largest diameter I have seen.
