Does the float test work on Pawpaw seeds?

When Persimmon, Pecan and Walnut seeds float they are duds.

Does the same hold true for Pawpaws?

The opposite is true for pawpaws in many cases. They evolved to float downstream to colonize a new area.

I finally got some Pawpaws off of my wild trees. While rinsing off the seeds I noticed most were floaters.
BTW several seedlings and grafts going from our trade. Thanks again

Yea floaters (especially fresh seeds) are a good sign. Just make sure they stay moist throughout stratification. I used moist coconut coir this year. Check for mold occasionally, they’ll need 3 months in the refrigerator (NOT the freezer).

No, floating seeds does not mean they’re bad in this instance.
A very thin / flat seed might not be viable, but a very high percentage are in my opinion.

I had an elderly gentleman give me a poke full of seeds about 3 years ago, apparently from several wild forest trees. Not knowing if he properly stratified, and the fact they seemed dry, I planted three to a pot (one gallon nursery pot)–and many of the pots had at least two seedlings, and in several instances the third seed came up the following summer.
