In order to improve security and reliability I plan to move growingfruit to a new virtual machine.
So, tonight I plan to upgrade the current install to the latest version, and then tomorrow night I will copy it all over to a new machine.
It should be down for at most 15 minutes tonight, and maybe an hour tomorrow night. On top of that it may take awhile for your devices to learn about the new location.
And of course as always something horrible could go wrong … aren’t computers wonderful?
Heres a couple items about the hopeful migration later this evening…
You will probably need to log back in again
If you need to log back in and it says something about an insecure page you can ignore that… that warning is something I will fix eventually.
Your computer should learn about the location of the new site pretty soon, but if the old one is not loading you can always try new.growingfruit.org which is where the new one will be. After 24 hours you should definitely be able to see the new site at growingfruit.org so don’t access it with new.growingfruit.org after that.
I did a dry run of the migration and it all worked so I am optimistic there won’t be too many glitches. But you never know, these systems have very many parts.
Thanks! This new “machine” is twice as big more or less so we should have super-smooth operations for several years. Also we are now running Discourse 2.0, it has several new features and looks a little different.
OK one more downtime coming, we’ll be down for 15 minutes tonight. This is to enable https for more security, this puts that lock “on” in the top of the browser and hopefully no more warnings about insecure this or that.
There were a few glitches but they should all be ironed out now. when you go to http://growingfruit.org it will now automatically redirect to the secure version, https://growingfruit.org. Let me know if there are any problems.
