A drought has snuck up on the Mid-Atlantic with little pattern change in sight. We have had about half our expected rainfall for 2023 so far.
oops, I hope the situation improves for you.
Based on the map, the drought is limited to more piedmont and/or costal parts of the mid Atlantic.
The more interior regions of mid Atlantic is not in drought (yet).
For your region, what is the historically common amount of annual rainfall?
There is an upside. As a result brown rot pressure may be reduced.
Mid Atlantic (and most of east coast) gets around 40 inches / year. Further south gets more rain (I believe from Guf of Mexico moisture)
April through Sept mostly average 3+ inches/month.
With few exceptions our location is 9"-12" / year over the past 25 years with zero between April and October. This year we’ve seen 28" which I recall on two other occasions.
45”
Should be around 11” by now, but we have had about 5.5” since Jan 1.
Good point.
Although being on a well, it makes me nervous if it doesn’t turn around at some point.
I think I’m ahead in precip again. Been the case for at least 7 years.
Praise the Lord for no long term droughts here in my part of Kentucky.
I did not realize that. I think I am about normal, in agreement with the map.
Looks like some folks in VA/MD/PA are getting rain this weekend.
Accuweather is claiming I should get some rain on Sat and again on Mon.
Hope everyone’s trees get a good drink.
We now show as being in a moderate drought here in Arlington, VA based on the drought monitor site and the little rain we were supposed to get today turned out to be just enough to slightly wet the ground. Only .15 inches are predicted for tomorrow at this point, so that won’t do much.
It seems like we’ll be dry for a while, plus warmer than usual, so I’m definitely doing a lot more watering so far this year.
As usual the predicted rain seems to be disappearing before it arrives. Our forecast is now showing .01”, so basically nothing.
It won’t add up to squat. I guarantee it.
Yeah, and frankly anything less than a half an inch isn’t even worth it. It won’t penetrate the soil enough to reach the root zone of anything but maybe grass.
It might as well not rain at all, except maybe to wash the pollen out of the air.
