Dwarf pine pruning advice

I have a bunch of dwarf pines shielding some pumping equipment and they are starting to get a little wide for there space. I’m not sure how prune then to keep them from encroaching on the wall and the sidewalk.

Anyone have any advice?

Thanks!!

Usually they need some pruning every year, to keep a good shape. I’m not familiar with this species, wish I could help. You best use electric pruning shears. They do a great job on conifers. But when to prune this species is not known by me?

Thanks Drew!

I’m sure you’ve seen this species before. It’s just a run of the mill pine from Lowes/Home Depot. Next time I go, I’ll get a photo of the tag.

So I just sort of give it a haircut? How far down do I go each year?

They are dwarf alberta spruces. Can be trimmed very minimally. You can easily cause dead spots by cutting too far. I usually recommend not doing anything.

Thanks Ampersand. That’s what I was afraid of.

Is there anything I can do to keep them about the same size they are? (width not height)

buy new ones, they grow about 3-5 inches a year, buy a couple in 3 gallon cans, replace again in 15 years

Funny you say that Moley. I transplanted these in from other parts of the yard and replaced them in their original locations so I’ve got some starter plants going!

Not much you can do, no. A good garden center may carry a variety grown by Iseli Nursery called ‘Jean’s Dilly’ that grows more narrow and slower than the traditional Dwarf Alberta Spruce.
