I have a small space and was looking at getting a dwarf pomegranate…but I don’t water things I can’t eat. How are the fruits on a dwarf?
Thanks in advance!
Not of any consequence, Steve. They are basically lovely ornamental plants.
I would like to add that standard pomegranate trees are small. They grow to be about 8ft wide by 8 feet tall
True dwarfs even the edible ones are sour enough to make jam and pomegranate molasses with them. There may be sweeter ones that I can get in time yet even then I doubt they’d be sweet enough to eat fresh. There are some semi dwarf ones that are great.
Although if you can get a true yet wild dwarf pomegranate like Purple sunset, like the black skinned ones that I am growing by seed, like nana, then you could use that as a dwarfing rootstock for many full sized pomegranate varieties. It would be like what is done to citrus plants so that people in cold climates could grow them too. I forget what country yet the wild rootstock technique is used there a lot.
Thanks for the feedback…great info.
So now I’m looking for a pomegranate that would do well on the coast of California. Doesn’t freeze much, but also rarely gets over 75.
Thanks!!!
