Easy way to start a Celery plant

It only takes 1 minute. Chopped the top off for consumption and push the bottom in the soil. Done.

Tony

The one sprouted was 8 days ago and the other one was planted today.

So first you buy some celery, and then you go to Starbucks?

I’m trying chinese pink celery this year. Very slow growing from seed so far…

I also start green onions this way.

Great idea! Does it fully regrow or does it partially grow back and quickly goes to flower like when you do this to lettuce?

It is fully regrow for me. It also worked well with Cilantro bundle and Bok Choy from the Asian Market.

Tony you are a genius i have done this with onions i halved and meant to eat and it has worked out very well. Normally celery is not worth it in my climate but i am going to try some this year. Are there any kinds that take to dry and heat better than others?

Thanks for the tip, Tony! Is that indoors or outdoors? (I know you’re in zone 5, like us, so I’m curious about how early you were able to start it. I guess the plastic gives it some protection?)

We did this with scallions last year, too, and that worked pretty well. Have also been sticking scallion bottoms in a little water and putting them on the window sill, and they do put out enough new growth to get some use out of, though not really full regrowth.

These are my grow pots outside and the cup protect them from late frost for now and a green house effect. You can start them inside in late March and move them out side when the weather gets warmer.

Thanks, Tony, we’ll have to give it a try!

Well…
That may be about as much fun , …
As one can have with the bottom of celery one has eaten
But …
Celery is a biennial .
So that will go to seed , as it is in it second year…
You may get something out of it. But not likely a nice bunch of celery as you are hoping for.
Here is some celery , that has gone to seed. Last year.
So was 2 years old last year.
These seeds should have been planted early this year for nice "bunches " this fall… May still plant some yet, but it’s getting late…
So I would assume that at best , you will end up with a plant that goes to seed. Some leafs you can eat. Not likley a bunch of celery. But lots of seed…That’s not a bad thing…

Same thing happened to mine, and all kind of little bugs loved the plants. It was nice for a while.

Tony,
Cilantro around here (in Asian markets), they trim off the roots. it is not easy re-grow them. Thai cuisine uses a lot of cilantro roots as one of ingredients. I am disappointed when their roits are chopped off.
