Encyclopedia of Hardy fruits, by U.P. Hendrick, 1922

Hi all,

I figured the folks here may find this book interesting. Its published in 1922 and is an encyclopedia of cold hardy fruit cultivars. It has very interesting descriptions of many different types of fruit, apples, pears, plums, etc. Ive been enjoying reading it and I am far from finished. And best, its searchable!

Can be downloaded here, really nice read. will take me awhile to get through it (even just skimming)

Most interesting to me so far is that aparently high bush blueberry which now has quite al ot of cultivars was not domesticated yet in 1922.

Interestingly persimmon page mentions a american and japanese persimmon hybrid, which I thought was a pretty recent development and I’m curious about.

That is interesting as it is one of the very few places that mentions and describes the Ansault pear. It is considered extinct because it was just not good enough that anyone propagated it.

Interesting that the book is quite positive on it

I had read years ago ‘Ansault’ was of highest quality but visually unattractive, so lost when production for grocery stores became the top priority.
