Has anyone tried the Rein Claude-Mirebelle? From what i read it is a cross of Rein Claude and a Mirebelle.Only place Ive seen it is on Raintree.com
I think @jeremy meant raintreenursery.com.
I grow a couple of regular mirabelles. I don’t know about a cross between Reine Claude and a mirabelle.
The Claude may need to be omitted. So it’s, ‘Reine de Mirabelle’ or as the Arboreum Company has the name, Reine des Mirabelles.
Here is their description:Not a true mirabelle, but a hybrid between gage and mirabelle, we had saved from the Geneva New York State plum collection and at last make available ourselves. Exquisite, succulent, amber fleshed, combining the best qualities of each parent. Every fruit is to be treasured, as among the finest products of the garden.
Sounds very nice.
Right thats its a hybrid.I was gonna try and grow some of the gages and mirebelles in Mississippi. How do you think they would do?From what I read Micheal Mckonkey write they would need to be sprayed with surround to prevent Brown Rot,we also have PC. Its hot and humid down here.I was gonna graft them on a krysmk rootstock and keep them small to be managable.I cant seem to find the rein/mirebelle scion available anywhere,so I assume raintree is the only place to get just the tree itself.
How cold are your winter temps?
The question above is for you.
I would guess we get around 5-7 hundred chill hours. So we get below 32° not a whole lot but maybe a month out of the whole winter
I do not know Michael Mckonkey. I can tell you from my experience using Surround (kaolin clay) did not work for brown rot prevention.
Growing Euro plums, brown rot and black rot are real issues.
I grew Reine des Mirabelles, it was very tasty. It was not productive for me though so I took it out. I wished I had waited a few more years in retrospect, some of the Euro plums took a very long time to get productive.
I agree with @mamuang that Surround is not going to help with rots at all. I can’t believe that Michael would think that! I know from first-hand experience with over 20 years using Surround, 10 of which I didn’t use any synthetic disease control and got a ton of brown rot in spite of all the Surround.
Ok I had read that on his website. It was under the allred plum he sales. On the description part.On his new website he gives alot of information on care of the trees. So does anything help with the brown rot
Ok Micheal is the edibable landscape guy.I had read that about surround on the description and care of the allred plum he sales. So will anything help with brown rot? Was gonna graft them onto krysmk rootstock and try keep tham small.I am also in mississippi which is hot and humid in summer.Wonder if I am wasting time and money on them
I’m curious what kind of mess I will end up making with my first use of Surround which should be next year assuming I get some fruit set.
Coating fruit and leaves with clay can only be a hindrance to insects. I don’t think clay has any fungal, bacterial, or viral inhibition properties unless indirectly by helping control the insect vectors that spread it.
Oh and it will reduce the skin (surface) temperature of whatever it coats a bit…
@Jeremy — I started a couple EU Plums here in Southern Middle TN… This season was year 5 for them.
I saw a few blossoms on both trees this spring for the first time… then one of them got some kind of (Wilt ???) and died, just a short while after leafing out.
In a couple of previous seasons, one of them got black knot, and I removed that (entire limb)… but that same tree died this spring of some kind of wilt ?
The other tree it still living… but it did not look all that good the last half of the growing season. Not sure if I will ever get a EU plum.
My two varieties are / were… Rosy Gauge (the one that died)… Mt. Royal… still hanging in there.
Expect you are a little hotter and possibly even more humid than I am. Good Luck !!!
TNHunter
That is more than enough cold. Humidity? Are you in Arizona ?
