Now you just need a flowercloud? Male to round out your male collection ![]()
really interested in sources of more kolomikta cultivars
I got mine from a local nursery. They don’t ship unfortunately but I’ve seen one green world and restoring eden have them in stock in person. I think shipping is getting too expensive for everyone so they don’t update their online stock anymore until they get a new shipment and the plants are smaller.
When i went to one green world, they were shipping out like robots because they had so many orders. Same with restoring eden.
I can send you cuttings in the fall if you don’t end up finding any near you. That’s just cost effective from a shipping standpoint. I bought new 10 inch boxes for shipping everyone cuttings as well ![]()
If i can find it
I’m going to be heading out again today to grab more if they’re in stock.
onegreenworld has most of what’s available in the U.S.
Got it - that’s good to know at least (though I would love to get more from outside US too). Thank you for your kind offer @Melon — it’s genuinely hard just to keep up with stock these days!
If I had a time machine and can go back and change my hardy kiwi selection I would have bought 2 self pollinating ones. I have a male and female. Only one flowered lasy year. This year one is full of flower buds and the other only has a few. Its ben maybe 6 seasons now and I dont remember which is which. I’ll be happy to get a few just to taste them fresh. Fingers crossed.
My Dad has 4 hardy kiwi planted in his back yard, 1 male, 3 female. This is their 3rd year in the ground. This is the male plant, but aren’t those fruit? It’s the only plant that has flowered yet. I forgot to remember the name of the variety, but it had arctic in the name.
Is it an Issai self-fertile one?
Would getting a self fertile variety be a possible replacement for a male vine?
If it works (i.e. the bloom times overlap and the Issai provides adequate pollen for the females in practice) it’s what I’d probably do. I haven’t grown any since I was a kid though, my parents were managing them, didn’t know what they were doing, and we got like five hardy kiwi in 15 years, so I couldn’t say if that’s the case or not.
that’s a great question…
If that’s the case, I won’t put my Issai so close to my male lol. They grow so fast. Some of mine have already put on over 2ft of growth
anyone have thoughts on prolific and how is it compared to issai?
Once mature it requires constant pruning. Prune the longer shoots and keep the short laterals.
They are like grapes so prune when green or when totally dormant. If you prune semi-dormant they will leak fluid out the fresh cuts.
I thought I recalled reading here that one MSU in circulation is genetically the same as Chico/Jumbo and the other as Anna.
I think that came out of the UNH genetic testing?
I have no idea but I’ll find out ![]()

JesseS is growing some cultivars from eastern europe. i have 3 grown from cuttings he gave me 3 years ago. hes not on here often but send him a pm. maybe he could gift or trade you.
My “self fertile” Issai barely pollinates itself and always has a poor fruit load. I would not trust it to pollinate another vine.
Issai can’t pollenize other females. It’s a female that doesn’t produce viable pollen. It can (sometimes) set seedless fruit parthenocarpically.
