Do you have a photo of your red ones?
So they don’t fruit again on old wood? Only new correct?
i have 4 female and a male arctic kiwi. dont remember the names. mostly Russian named. they are much easier to control and the fruit is delicious and abundant. my grape vines puts out more growth than they do. fruits the size of a commercial grape. 3 of them were from cuttings from JesseS.
You aren’t growing the right varieties or maybe don’t have the right climate.
Hardy can be much sweeter and every bit as flavorful.
I’m just jumping down this rabbit hole because I’m pretty sure I’ve only had unripe ones from the grocery store. Really want to be able to try it ripe. I know, 5 plants at once but like, why not? I hear “berry like” in a lot of descriptions so maybe it’ll be like me and passion fruit later on when I’ve had a good one that i grew myself and end up trying to collect them all.
Not a fan of the fuzz on fuzzy kiwi
If i end up disappointed, someone can have all my kiwi plants or I’ll chop it up and give them away for people to root. If not, then i gotta catch them all lol
Melon = addict … just like most of us.
My thing is, at least this isn’t drugs…
Someone close to me whos trying to get clean has been ordered to get methodone treatment every day for an entire month, has had their license suspended, and other things.
I’m trying to get her into gardening instead of drugs
May have to deal with spider mite but at least i don’t have to go to therapy for this only get to come here to complain but on my own terms
I can stop when i want, i swear!
We have one Jenny fuzzy for two years now, and one Issai hardy that we just got this season.
We are in zone 8A but we get snow and frost in Spring.
A lot of Jenny gets killed off, however I noticed that every year a little more remains. I think it’ll just have a harder time getting bigger or faster here.
I had a heck of a time getting a nice hardy kiwi. The season before last I ordered early but didn’t get the plants in my order and so I ordered one Issai from Stark Bros and a 2 inch little tiny twig arrived dead so then I ordered again from Ison’s And this year I was rewarded with a very nice looking plant. that is way ahead of the little twig Stark Brothers sent. It’s waking up now.
Unless hardy can pollinate fuzzy kiwi, I will be able to report back on just how self fertile they are since I only have one Jenny fuzzy and one Issai hardy plant.
my arctics taste better than any fuzzy kiwi I’ve got from a store.
For the fuzzy ones, just cut them in half and eat them with a spoon.
I know, but i still don’t like the fuzz
I hear ya, I prefer nectarines over peaches because of the skin.
I did still get some peach trees, but I mostly focused on nectarines.
I guess the fuzz never bothered me on fuzzy Kiwi because I found it easier to avoid eating the skin, which is a bigger pain with peaches.
I don’t think all peaches have the same amount of fuzz though, but one time I had one that I felt like the skin was made out of velvet lol.
Kiwi fruit on new growth coming off 1 year old wood.
Issai does not produce viable pollen, so it won’t pollenize your Jenny. However, Jenny is a “fruiting male” and could pollenize Issai if the bloom periods overlap. In most climates the fuzzy kiwi will bloom much later than hardy kiwi.
Trader joes around me usually has them in the fall if you want to try some. I tried to grow issai a few years ago and found it finicky and never got any fruit
Also I’ve noticed they’re very heavy eaters. All of mine are just about a month old in my care, i haven’t repotted them yet even, and they’ve all put over over a foot of growth in many places on all of my plants. I have a few trying to fruit as well.
You might be picking them at the wrong time. They need to be spongy to take advantage of the sweetness.
I have both but still potted as of right now. Was waiting on their area to be cleared but it just got done yesterday. They’ll be growing on a metal wire trellis about 150-175 ft long.
So far I’ve acquired:

I may add in another male for the kiwiberries and am looking for more artic kiwi varieties right now.
I’ve measured my garden area and its 200 ft x 125-150 ft. Not sure if i want to extend it out to the full 150 or not. This doesn’t include the area for my fruit tree orchard or the area where I’ll be planting all my fig trees. So about half an acre will be for:
Grapes, passion fruit, kiwiberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, asparagus, garden beds. I may or may not put both my greenhouses in this area. Not sure what i wanna do with those yet. I have one that’s scheduled to be built at 20x40 but i may go 30x40 depending on the price of wood these days, and one 24x12 that i just need put together. I’m determined to grow ruby supreme along with Mangos here. I have 2 years to show a few investors what I’m capable of and if everything goes well, this will might the start of a new fruit business venture. my main focus will be growing tropical fruits here in the pnw.
