Experience with Red Fleshed Apples

If I were you, I would prioritize finding Pink Parfait first. It was a very good red flesh apple.

Any idea where can I get scions in Europe? Our sources are somewhat limited.

Sorry, you did not state your location. Please do. It will help us give you relevant responses.

I don’t know if Pink Parfait is available in Europe and if so, under what name?
We have several European members here. @Luisport has a good collection of red fleshed apples. Maybe, he can share his sources with you.

I’ve recently grafted a couple of Huonville crabs (and the improved, Magnus Summer Surprise) that I’m mostly hoping to use a seed & pollen parents, but I’ve not actually tasted one before. Are you able to describe it for me? Being an Aussie red-flesh means info and correlating sources are scares for it…

Side note: I’m really hoping to cross it with Anna and Dorsett to create a early to first flower, and low chill hours red flesh, wish me luck!

Anybody in USA picked a Odysso yet this year?
Do you have a rating on it? Or, is it not ripe for anyone yet?

Jeremiah, my Redfield had less red, and it nearer pink than red.
It finally had fruit…and unblemished except for plum curculio damage inside.

Actually an apple that has a “trademarked” name you can propagate and market. But if you use the same name you are in violation of the law and owe the trademark owner his fee.

So sale under another name happens all the time. Cripps Pink (Pink Lady) is an example from Australia.

So, how have your red fleshed apples performed since this post 5 years ago?

I accidentally knocked one of my Odysso off the tree a couple days ago,and tried it. It was definitely not ready.

my potted redlove calypso dropped a few apples in the storm last night. they were not fully colored outside or in and sour, but only just this side of sour/sweet, I think if it holds onto the rest for another two weeks they’ll be great. tree is 2nd leaf, #20 pot, probably on m7 but not sure, 1.5" caliper, about 30 apples

@DMend and @z0r thanks for chiming in. I picked my one fruit today…plan to store it two or more weeks before trying it. Mine is a similar sized 3rd leaf probably on M9.
I have a total of 5 that might fruit next year…two purchased trees, two grafted trees I made, and a limb on Frankentree #1.

Just an update. I left some Redlove Circe apples on the tree, and picked some last couple of days. Fully ripe it has a very good taste, a bit sour but not unpleasant. My brother, who is somewhat picky, when it comes to flavours, loved it, and even said that it’s a very good apple.

If picked too early I find Huonville crabapples to be a bit too sour and much like a crab apple. If left to ripen on the tree fully the texture changes completely, and the taste is really nice. Not sour in the slightest. The texture is unlike any other apple I have ever eaten, I really like it, but difficult to explain.

I have a few seedling trees growing out that are Huonville crab x Cripps Pink (aka pink lady). I will let you know in ten years if they are any good and if any have red flesh…

That’s really interesting! I can’t wait until mine are old enough to set fruit!

Good luck with your crossed seedling, did any of them keep the red/silver leaves?

I only grew a small number, but about half have red leaves.

I am planning to cull the green leaf ones as I think the red leaf may have a higher chance of red flesh.

That certainly seems to be the case from what I’ve heard/read from others.

I’d love to see a photo of them!

They are still tiny at the moment, so not much to see yet.

I will try to upload a picture anyway…

How is the taste? I have a big tree, but didn’t fruit yet.

I like them a lot. This year i let them stay on tree more time than the usual and they got sweet without any acidity and some berry flavour like raspberry. They got a bit less redflesh too… they are not big producers and apples are small to medium.
