You could be right about it being an abandoned experiment.
But a red flesh tht is not acidic is something I hope to obtain in time myself.
I’ll try to get some scion this winter
Does anyone have any experience with the red moon apple?
I would be highly interested in getting some scionwood from this tree as well. Would gladly cover postage/gas burned driving to get it etc! I also have about 30 apple varieties I could offer in trade.
me too. same offer.
I’ve had Red Moon (Roter Mond) for some time…but can’t get the graft interested in doing anything…couple inches per year. So, the jury is out…mine is alive, but there’ll be no scions available for forseeable future.
Try breaking off the terminal bud. I’ve noticed a few of my trees will only put on a few inches of growth per year, but a few got their uppermost growth tip eaten by deer. Several wound up putting on 1+ feet of growth late in the season.
Thanks…I may do that, and graft the piece I cut (even if it happens to be 2-year scion–
maybe put the scion on a Frankentree.
My theory is that in some instances a tree develops excessive apical dominance for some reason and removing the terminal bud breaks that pattern.
Interesting theory.
Some of the red fleshed apples just aren’t vigorous anyhow.
One exception is Niedzwetzkyana–It can grow limbs bigger than a pencil in current season and reach 15 feet on M111 in 5 years. And mine this year, around August 1, not much sour, not much sugar, but not bitter…and more juice than usual. Sufficient moisture in soil all year. (Made a good pie. Acceptable for eating out of hand.)
My Niedzwetzkyana graft has grown at least 3 feet of pencil plus sized wood this year. Odysso in comparison is a tiny two inch twig.
It’s offspring Redfield behaves similar. I had 3 grafts of it on m7 in my nursery bed and 2/3 put on 4+ feet of growth.
Took my Redfield (a 2-year old feathered bare-root tree) planted in 2016 until this year for first crop…tree is about 10 feet tall currently and had about 15 apples harvested in late July. Glad you’ve had good results.
I like the original better than Redfield, based on first year.
I’m a total sucker for that effect of the blossom within the fruit.
This apple looks stunning. Any chance for sending scions to Europe? I have quite a few redfleshed apple’s to trade scion from, Simontornyai Veralma included.
there’s a new redlove variety “Jedermann’s/Everybody’s” which is specifically bred to not be sweet+sour like every other redlove apple, but only sweet. released 2019 and I don’t think it’s made it to the US yet. for anyone disappointed in the sour/sweet balance of the existing redloves
The hype has exceeded the product so far from Markus Kobelt.
yeah, I think you’re right, at least going off the US nursery descriptions. the lubera website is more upfront about them being sweet/tart and listing notes like “you can’t eat calypso off the tree, it needs 1-3 weeks in the fridge to develop enough sweetness”. releasing “everybody’s” is an admission that they were too tart for most people all along.

imo the nice thing about redloves is they have good scab resistance and mild powdery mildew resistance, while also being a novelty color. I live in a high scab+mildew area and can’t be bothered to spray for these so I skip growing a lot of things
Apparently you’re correct about the scab and maybe mildew. At least that’s something.
But, then, existing red fleshed varieties (leaving out the Etter apples) are pretty disease resistant.
