Is your red fleshed apple program making progress?
I’ve added about 7 more varieties this spring. Looks like Niedzetzkyana is going to bloom first this year, and the one on G202 a little earlier than a couple on M111.
Last year Redfield bloomed a day or so first. Geneva Crab blooms for first time, and should pollinate if nothing else is in bloom.
i made some beautiful red, tasty apple sauce last fall from a friends large red crabapple tree. they were even more red than the one above and a little dry but still good for fresh eating. theyre about 2in.fruit. im thinking of digging a wild whip and grafting it on. the tree is extremely productive with no care and no bug or disease issues.
If my grafts get enough growth this year, I can send you some scions of it next season. I’m up to about 40 different redfleshed apples now. Well if all my grafts take I will be.
You all are a little earlier, but not much. I have Redfield at petal fall, Odysso first king bloom opened, Geneva and Niedz. are in partial bloom. I don’t have any traditional apples in bloom yet, but Spitzenberg looks to be in bloom by the 15th.
Our chilly conditions have actually got our apple bloom in Kentucky at “normal” dates or even later. I used to pollinate a commercial orchard (rented bees) and usually Apr. 8 to 15 through Apr. 18-26 or so produced the crop and I had to move the bees so they could spray the trees. (Approx. 30 years ago.)
So, after a couple years of ‘early’…this appears to be a normal bloom time in apples here in Kentucky (USA).
I have flower buttons on Odysso, Red devil and Bloody Ploughman too for the first time…
Simontornya Veralma didn’t wake up yet… Rosette is full of flowers!
