Yeah, I think my espaliers are on Bud 9. I put the rootstock on the tags, so I just need to look.
Janet, excuse my late reply. It is ‘Roberts crab’.
with SkillCults auctions ending tomorrow, is there anything anyone would recommend from his varieties?
some of the cider desc sound interesting (the JellyBean Cider and Hard Candy Cider, although those are non-red).
I’ve gotten black strawberry to fruit and it was a very good apple, black and red is an improvement with similar crosses I think.
is it better than lets say Rubaiyat?
I contacted Derek about this one as i really like russetted apples … Anyone try it. Is it good tastin’?
Thought that was a purple carrot. Roberts Crab is pretty
I snagged Hard Candy Cider, Black Strawberry, Cherry Crush and Vanilla Pink. Will comment on taste as they fruit in the next two years.
Howdy! Im a bit further north of you in TX. Home nursery in Fort Worth and newish orchard in Hunt County/ Greenville NE of Dallas.
Our apples faired out well last season despite huge grasshopper pressure.
We planted Geneva in the Fall and I have 17 red fleshed scions to graft onto rootstock & heirloom cultivars. The orchard is a few degrees cooler, has dappled shade & gets more rain than we do in Fort Worth but Im going to trial the red fleshed & breed, too.
Do you have any apples growing right now? Happy growing!
Kimberly
Question for Red Fleshed Apple enthusiasts.
Is there a Red Fleshed apple that is crisp and has some intense flavor with a bit of tart to it? Thanks for your input.
Out of my over 1,900 different apple varieties about 270 or so varieties are red, orange or pink fleshed. If you mean crisp like any of the modern varieties that are crosses with HoneyCrisp that is the goal of many breeding programs but if you mean McIntosh like texture there are quite a few like Red Devil or Clifford. Some like Apricot Apple are not just crisp but actually hard. I have the newer varieties like Lucy Glo, Rose and Gem and they are crosses of HoneyCrisp.
I have red devil and Lucy glo
Probably best fits
I just got pink parfait but no apples yet
I have winekist which can be tart for some
All of my trees are young but I’m happy so far
I think some breeders focus too much on the red flesh and not enough on texture, disease resistance, keeping and overall flavor. But I’m sure they’ll improve
I’m curious about black strawberry
I wonder if that’s what my scion is, the tree has good size purple - maroon apples in June in 5b!
Did your Lucy Glo give you any problems?
WOW, 270 crosses?!!!
What’s your best 5?
I’m just curious weather you tried any Fuji red flesh crosses…
Not yet
I’m mostly paranoid about fireblight but none yet
This was a response from many years ago about your red flesh apple trials.
How many red flesh cultivars did you try & are any of them still alive? You referenced Almata, Red Russian etc.
Im trialing some red flesh in N TX, zone 8. Anything that helped support the growth of the RF apples? Copius watering, extra space between trees/ rows???
Really appreciate any thoughts. I know its a risky idea in my hot zone, I have alot of wind so Im hopeful that might help?
270 of our 1,900 apple varieties are red, orange or pink fleshed named varieties, not crosses. However I do have 50 or so crosses of my own that we grow here and most of them are red fleshed as well.
Derek, once upon a time you listed your favorites as Blue Pearmain, Kentucky Limbertwig, Moyer’s Spice, Cornish Aromatic, and red fleshed Red Devil, Pink Pearl, and Winekist. Plus “almost anything that is ripe at the time.”
Any changes?
