Hello, I’m new to this pear and this is my first harvest. I have maybe 6-10 of them. I checked them today and the pear came off easily. I am thinking of picking them all and putting them in the fridge for 2 weeks. Does this sound like the right time? It’s 9/8 and I’m in zone 6a
Thanks
I’d think so. There’s always the risk with pears that if you leave them too long they’ll start to go bad from the inside.
If the seeds were black, and if they all were to come off easily, then chances are that it’s a good time, although sometimes there is not a right time, like sometimes the first year of crop, the fruit is not edible no matter when picked, that has happened to me one year. Not with a FDML fruit, another European kind of pear. Seeds were black, pear easily came off, and it smelled sweet. Could not even bite in to it.
@scottfsmith can you help on this question. I’m wondering also. I’d like to add the question. Do they need any fridge time?
These pears can be hard to pick as they can still be fairly green. I try to pick them when they are no longer intense green and are more like lime green. When they are yellow they can be over the hill. I have picked early ones on my tree and I should pick the rest soon. They will come off easily when they are ready.
Thank you. I picked the rest of them last night and have them in the fridge. According to previous posts on here I am planning to keep them in the fridge for 2 weeks the ripen on the counter.
I was wondering, so I’m posting for anyone else who was as well:
