Figs with tight eyes (ostiole) are desirable in multiple growing conditions. In humid and rain-prone areas it prevents water from entering the fig cavity. In all areas it discourages pests due to insect eggs.
Here is a list in progress of female figs with tight eyes. Additions and corrections are welcome .
Angelita, Adriatic JH, most all the CdD figs I’ve tried, definitely my Mutante. Black Mission, Crozes, these were first year but seemed tight. Borda Barraquer, Zaffiro, Maltese Beauty.
The only one I haven’t really confirmed to be ttt is the Maltese Beauty. I’ll be following this post because to me a closed eye in very important quality to me.
There’s so many misnamed figs and downright intentional misnaming for sales or not knowing. The few dedicated fig sites always cower down when it comes to integrity of figs and sales unless it’s someone or some fig they like.
Also I believe you have the archives for figs4fun. They have a list of closed eye figs but I can’t find that server.
I live in the humid Southeast, west central Georgia. My figs are grown in ground, in soil that has a lot of clay. They don’t receive supplemental water after establishment. From your list, I’ve only grown four-Celeste, Hardy Chicago, Green Ischia, and LSU Gold. LSU Gold has consistently had a problem with both open eyes and splitting.
In my experience the amount of rainfall near ripening has a large effect on the eye’s status. Not much rain and the eye will remain closed. LSU gold ripens very early for me, during a period with typically heavy spring and early summer rains. It might not have this problem if it ripened later in the year when we will go weeks with rain.
