I have a very young violet de bordeaux that has one branch with a completely different leaf shape from all the others. (It is definitely coming off the same plant, I can see where it meets the plant above ground.)
How common is this in figs?

Pretty common. My VdB had both skinny as well as giant leaves.
That’s common for VdB. Mine does the same. My older growth branches have the spade shaped leaves while younger branches have the 5 lobed leaves with thin fingers. I get more of the 5 lobed branches when I do more pruning. Also, cuttings started from VdB start off with the 5 lobed leaves.
Yeah keep an eye on it. I do agree it’s fairly common though. I have seen it on my plants. I have a mulberry that has yet to have a spade leaf. All fig leaves so far. Plants are cool!
