Figs 2024

I think I might be able to claim earliest fig of the year.

Ronde de Bordeaux really exceeding it’s reputation for a very early fig. Good flavor too, jammy and nice seed crunch.

Figs leafing out after some warm weather. First figs should be ripe sometime in May.

Nice, and that looks like a proper greenhouse, or sunroom?

Try some big air layers this year. Slip pots over long branches before leaf out. I potted some of last years yesterday.

my over winter figs are fully awake in the greenhouse. I will start the shuffle this month to get them outside.

some have breba ripening, I hope to get at least a few there before the new ones start. florea and white Genoa as usual are doing best for me here.

ignore the haas avocado start that’s unhappy in the background please, my partner planted it from seed despite being warned

First ripe main crop for me in the high tunnel this year is De Tres Esplets and they were really nice. Creamy texture with mild seed crunch and a sweet flavor reminiscent of a “light” cream soda.

These are some rooted Fig cuttings. Is it wise to pot them now,in the middle of Summer?@fruitnut?

They’re in clear cups so what do the roots look like? I normally don’t up pot until the current pot is full of roots.

Okay, thanks. Here are some photos of the root areas.

The roots look better than the tops. There are barely any leaves. A plant ready to up pot should have way more growth than that. The roots look good enough to up pot. In a mix that drains well and with more fertilizer and water they should take off.

Started coming in July here. First fig was Florea. Rooted cutting late January. Very good and sweet.

Then Hollier came and it’s really out of this world.
This Unknown Pastiliere is tough to beat.

Brady is a very good fig. Grows fast, strong and is prolific. Mine was caprified and it’s been real hot here so probably intensified the flavors a bit but I think you’ll love it and should do pretty good in your climate. Haven’t had one split with all the water it gets.

Black Manzanita breba that ripened mid-July this year in the high tunnel.

Two weeks of heavy daily rains is hard on figs.

Some old brown turkeys at my parents’ place earning their keep despite the intense rain. You can’t let them ripen all the way, and bugs are getting their share, but getting any figs at all in this weather is something!

I’m surprised that the rain has been heavy enough even to spoil Celeste. I guess it’s the thinner skin, but almost none were worth eating. Brown Turkey is handling it better

No rain next week, so I think I’ll be able to get some decently ripe Celeste figs then.

For sure. That’ll ruin nearly any fig variety.

I’ve also had Celestes spoil and get watered down after several days of heavy rain in 2022. Most of my figs were ruined during that spell. Smith faired better than most. LSU Purple and Champagne also still had some decent figs through that. LSU Tiger did ok, but tasted watered down. The Etna types were mostly ruined. LdA was abysmal due to splitting and spoiling. Florea had minor splitting, but the riper ones got spoiled. RdB split. All were at least watered down, except for a few Smiths.
