Figs who's got them?

You’ll know because gnats will try to fly up your nose.

Make sure that clear cup is covered with a solid cup, the sun will pass through the clear cup and can heat up the mix enough to cook it otherwise.

I plan on repotting it today. My little dog has been sick so it has delayed me…

If you want to try and remove the mix, the safest way to do it is by swishing it around in a tub full of water. It would normally shock a plant to do a complete repot in the summer, but since it only has one leaf you should be OK, just be careful to not damage any fragile white roots when potting it and keep it shaded for a week or 2. Or just carefully poke some holes into the mix with a skewer to let more air and uppot it.

It really has very few Roots so I’m very unsure about changing out all the soil right now. I definitely don’t want to risk shocking the plant in such a fragile condition.

Do you know frozenjoe? He has a couple varieties I would like to try. That green mission being one. I am enjoying his videos thanks for the suggestion. There are other videos out there with people growing in Arizona but I don’t want to watch a video for 20 minutes! Some people just talk way too much! Thanks for the resource!

I know him from way back when Figs4Fun was still kicking, don’t have any way to get in touch with him now though.

Found him signed up here https://forum.marcofoodcoalition.org/profile/FrozenJoe. His last post was 3 years ago but you can sign up and try sending him a message.

Ok. Thanks. I suppose I can check on ourfigs group? Maybe he belongs to ARFG? I might be able to look there. I have been out of the loop for so long since I had a baby a couple of years ago.

He’s not a member at ourfigs. There was lots of bad blood between the forums, hooligans from ourfigs were the reason F4F shut down. There’s some good people there, don’t get me wrong, and there were bad people at F4F. I’ve been screwed by the owner of ourfigs and several members there so can’t recommend it.

hooligans? Weird the only in Japan guy (youtube) was just discussing that word last night and how it was widely used in the early 2000s … if you love Japan check that guy out…his livestreams can be interesting too (just walks around different areas of Japan pointing things out).

Fighting over figs? Wow… sad stuff there.

I’ve got Strawberry Verte off Ebay a year ago. Its grown huge this summer (closing in on 6 feet tall) but no fruit yet… maybe next year. I overwinter inside…it seem to keep most of its leaves but then when i took it outside this past spring those winter leaves didn’t like sun and a lot of them got severe sun burn…buts its all super healthy looking the past month or so.

Great. That’s exactly why I am not on a lot of forums. I read a lot of info but I don’t have time for drama. Try to skip it. Hate it. It’s a complete waste of my time. I simply want to learn and educate others if and when I can. No drama. Period. End of story.

I would pinch it to encourage figs. I am relatively new to figs but I have been burned by bigger box stores and others so my goal is to get true to type varieties.

Fighting over control of the newbies minds and their money, my opinion anyway. Back when I first joined F4F it was taboo for someone who was new to start selling plants and cuttings, because figs are already mixed up enough and there was a real effort to bring order (top priced cuttings were under $10). Ourfigs upset that tradition because people are willing to spend much more money at auction if it is acceptable among the group for them to quickly hack up their trees and resell. The problem of course is that sort of situation is very appealing to dishonest people, and because credibility of any one member depends on the group’s reputation they don’t ever turn on their own because that would take them all down a notch.

I do like Japanese stuff, watch Jun’s Kitchen regularly so I’ll check that out.

So where can I buy reputable varieties? I quickly have figured out that they do have a ton of drama. I rather skip it if possible. I love to just work with people who enjoy gardening and it’s not all about money. I took a gamble on that purchase and I hope it pays off. I believe it’s true to type. I am going to take your word for it. The man I bought it from does sell on figbid but doesn’t have an ourfigs account. After reading your post I can see why. It makes sense. I read on there and was cautious about posting because people can be pretty vicious. I would like to make more connections locally for figs in general. I haven’t been to any ARFG sales in a couple years at least. I just like to keep to myself when it comes to drama. Got enough of that from my teenagers! :joy::rofl:

I haven’t been buying for a few years now, but my favorite seller was hermansur on eBay. He was the one who inspired me to get into figs in the first place and everything I’ve ever bought from him has been true to type and advertised fairly. The prices are higher now, but quixotically his auctions seem to go for less in general because he doesn’t mess with these hot new varieties (many of which are from resellers illegally importing from questionable sources) and lists more cuttings, so bid what you are comfortable with and sometimes he offers second chances to move out more of them or you may win the next one.

Chances are you will come across a good grower locally sooner or later, there are many more fig growers than participate on forums and in general are friendly, want to share and meet other growers. Plant a tree in your front yard and they will probably find you, or keep your eyes peeled and have some plants ready to take with you for a trade. Patience pays off, lots of people end up killing lots of expensive plants and cuttings nowadays because they feel so confident with so much information available, it’s not till later you realize much of it is contradictory.

So have I.

I know this sounds silly but I haven’t figured out how to look up people by their name. Mind sending me a link? Probably because I am using my phone not a computer.

He generally begins selling cuttings sometime in September from what I remember.

There are lots of other good sellers too, in general they have fruit pictures and give descriptions that don’t arouse suspicion. The mites are a real problem though, at some point FMV became a divisive issue and polar opposite groups formed. In general I stay away from people who say things like “FMV is a non-issue” or “all figs have FMV”, because it makes me think they have the mite. But FMV itself is usually a minor problem, as long as you push trees for growth and get rid of any mites, it is still nice to get healthy material though.

I’m not sure if he still sells, but this guy used to offer harder to find varieties in enough volume that his auctions were reasonable. Good guy.

Yeah they didn’t return any results. Who runs ourfigs if you don’t mind me asking? I recently bought a couple figs off figbid. I am really concerned about FMV honestly. I have healthy thriving trees and don’t want to mess things up. I saw people ripping apart trees of Joy owner. Don’t know the man but sounds like he was trying to remedy the situation quickly before they exiled all his sales!

Cuttings are seasonal, fall to spring, usually cheapest in fall and most abundant winter to spring. Plant prices fluctuate, cheapest in late winter and early spring. WillsC owns Ourfigs.

Bass of TOJ is a good guy, don’t know what the drama was about, but he has been around for a long time and earned a good reputation rather than borrowed one from a mob.

I thought that he seemed decent. Apparently he sold someone something they said was not BM. He ended up refunding both orders and sending new plants. It was two years after the fact and they finally then stop trash-talking. Felt sorry for the guy. Anyway, not trying to start more drama either.:joy:
